Day 3 : Marrakech - Ouarzazate- Boumalen ( 390km)

We begin our exploration of the huge spaces of  the Deep South and the contrast between the stony desert wastes and the welcoming oases and palm groves.

We enter another world as we travel through the valley of one thousand casabas‚ meeting warm‚ friendly Berber people. After crossing the High Atlas mountains via the Tichka Pass at an altitude of 2260m‚ free optional lunch in Ouarzazate. Then continue eastwards‚ along the Dadés Valley‚ through superb rose-growing country before reaching Boumalne where we have optional dinner (free)  and spend the night overlooking this spectacular valley.

Day 4 : Boumalne- Tinghir- Rissani - Erfoud- Merzouga ( 300km)

After breakfast drive to explore the Dadés Gorge‚ a strange maze of cliffs cut into the rock by running water‚ where ancient casabas adorn the landscape. Stop to explore the magnificent Todgha Valley and its gorges‚ breath-takingly sheer cliffs at whose feet are the Todgha springs.

Optional lunch (free)  in Tineghir before heading South-East through Erfoud and Rissani‚ towards the dunes that mark the beginning of the great desert. Then split into teams of six per 4WD and follow off-road trails to reach our camp for the night.

We settle down to spend the night under canvas at the foot of the dunes. Authentic optional dinner under the stars.

Day 5 : Merzouga - Zagora ( 360km)

Experience the magic of sunrise over the dunes‚ with the chance to ride a dromedary. Enjoy a rare moment of silence in this overwhelming wilderness.

Then a Berber breakfast at the foot of the dunes before returning to our coaches at Rissani. Departure for Zagora‚ a garrison town at the edge of the desert‚ stopping at Tazzerine where we have optional lunch ( free) ‚ with time to take a photo in front of the sign pointing to Timbuktu - 52 days away by dromedary. We really are on the heels of the ’hommes bleus’.

We  press on to Tamegroute‚ a village of potters and also a religious centre‚ where we visit the Koranic library to see manuscripts written on gazelle skin. Free Evening meal and overnight accommodation at a hotel in Zagora.

Day 6 : Zagora- Ouarzazate ( 180km)

After breakfast‚ we travel along the Draa Valley towards Ouarzazate. One of the most beautiful palm groves stretches along the banks of the Draa river‚ studded with superb ksours‚ or fortified villages - past glories that recall the ancient splendour of this part of the caravan trail. Optional lunch (free) at Ouarzazate‚ opposite Ait Ben Haddou Ksar - familiar as the backdrop to many films and classed as a World Heritage Site - a tangle of labyrinthine alleys at the heart of the fortified village built of mud bricks.

On the way back to Ouarzazate‚ we visit the Taourirt Casaba‚ an impressive group of crenellated  ochre mud walls‚ the beautifully restored former home of Pacha Glaoui. Then back to the hotel for optional dinner and overnight accommodation.
